Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is designed for use before staining new, soft and porous wood surfaces, such as aspen, cherry, birch, poplar or pine with an oil-based stain. It penetrates the grain of the wood to promote uniform acceptance of oil-based wood stain and reduces streaking and blotching to help ensure beautiful, even coverage.
Instructions
General Finishes Oil Based Pre-Stain Conditioner Application Steps
For use with oil-based stains.
- Stir General Finishes Oil Based Pre-Stain Conditioner to reincorporate solids that have settled to the bottom of the can.
- Do NOT thin.
- Apply 1 coat of Pre-Stain Conditioner to raw wood using a clean cloth, a foam brush or paint pad applicator.
- Pre-Stain Conditioner Natural can improve color uniformity over difficult-to-stain wood species such as pine. However, it will limit color absorption, so a darker wood stain may be required to get the desired depth of color.
- Let Pre-Stain Conditioner penetrate the wood for 10+ minutes.
- Wipe off excess with a clean, dry cloth.
-
Let Pre-Stain Conditioner dry at least 30 minutes, but no longer than 2 hours before applying stain, in ideal conditions: 70°F/20°C; 50-70% humidity. Do not wait longer than 2 hours, and never let Pre-Stain Conditioner dry overnight before applying a stain over it.
